A nifty little box set that contains 3 45 RPM records, with 4 songs on each, with great artwork to boot. Inside besides the records, you got your very own Estrus sticker and a promo card to join the Estrus Crust Club, and last but not least your very own Estrus key chain that glows in the dark. That key chain proudly hangs in the ignition of my ’71 Triumph Tiger 650. Anyway as the title might suggest these 12 songs all have a car/hot rod theme. Not sure what kind of engine can run on nitroglycerin without throwing a rod out the side or where the Burrito Grand Prix takes place but it’s fun all the same.

Follow That Munster - Vol. 1

An interesting compilation with a cool ass cover. Sometimes one song can make an entire compilation worth the price of admission. Take A Small World by The Cavemen, what a great tune with it’s simple classic sixties organ swirling around beneath a basic three chord guitar track, with speak sing vocals from a poor dude that got dumped and is pleading to get her back... classic garage. The good stuff doesn’t end there with great tracks from the Countdowns, Different Parts, Quantrill Raiders, Decades, Barbarians, Staccatos and the Cardinals. Unfortunately there is one real stinker here too, Love Comes Love Goes by the inappropriately named Wild Things, guaranteed to clear the room. Fortunately the good outweighs the bad, and there is plenty of great garage to be found on Follow That Munster!

Crude PA (1990)

Take a trip to Pennsylvania with this compilation. This is a pretty solid album with winners from Pat Farrell & The Believers, The Snaps, Facts Of Life, The Sands Of Time and The Iron Gate among others. Plus you just have to hear I’m Gonna Make It by The Scholars, the only record I can think of that mixes doo-wop with garage, sounds goofy but it works pretty well, a cool artifact for sure. Some of these tracks were from acetates, so the sound quality on those tracks is a bit rough.

The Big Hits of Mid-America: The Soma Records Story 1963-1967

Excellent compilation from the legendary and great Soma records, from Minneapolis Minnesota, land of 10,000 lakes (actually there are 11,842). There seems to be 10,000 great records from the state too, with a great rock ‘n’ roll scene going back to the rockabilly days. No Soma story could be complete without the Trashmen’s Surfin’ Bird and The Castaways  Liar, Liar (which could possibly be my most perfect garage record of all time). There is plenty more to love on this set, The Deacons with the best version of Empty Heart I have ever heard, the High Spirits I Believe, The Messengers I’ve Seen You Around, The Gestures Run, Run, Run and let’s not forget Sir Winston & The Commons great punker We’re Gonna Love.

The New Bomb Turks - Information Highway Revisited (1994)

Another great slice of under appreciated rock ‘n’ roll greatness from Columbus Ohio. If you enjoyed the previous Devil Dogs post, you will most likely appreciate this too. To bad everybody had their head wrapped around “grunge” at the time of this release. There was definitely some great records coming out in the early nineties that were tragically ignored. This was the bands second long player, Destroy-Oh-Boy from 1993 was their first, which incidentally is every bit as good as this one. So maybe you haven’t heard this since the nineties or have never heard it, what the hell give it a spin you might like it.

Plan 9 - Keep Your Cool And Read The Rules (1985)

I swear, this will be my last Plan 9 post, mostly because after this record they lost my attention with a more standard rock approach. After Plan 9 released I’ve Just Killed A Man And I Don’t Want To See Any Meat live album for Midnight Records they signed with Enigma Records and its new creation Pink Dust. Keep Your Cool And Read The Rules was the result and released in 1985. This was a overall very good album, but it took awhile longer to grow on me than the previous albums. The band was branching out a bit with some jazzy psych flourishes on Poor Boy and Keep Your Cool, which would be explored further on  the Sea Hunt album. They faithfully cover Lothar & The Hand People’s Machines and flirt with some slide blues on Face In The Box and Hot Day.

Top notch rock ‘n’ roll album from this badass NY trio. One of the best records to come out of the 90’s, why this band didn’t gain wider recognition is beyond me. Produced by Kurt Bloch from Fastbacks, Young Fresh Fellows, Sicko fame, which may account for some of this albums greatness. 16 years later this record still sounds fresh and vital, which only goes to show that great rock ‘n’ roll is timeless. So if you missed this back in the day here’s your chance to redeem yourself.

Bevis Frond - Inner Marshland (1988)

One man psychedelic extravaganza from mastermind Nick Saloman, whose musical roots go all the way back to the late sixties. This was The Bevis Frond’s second release coming after Miasma. Very much in a Hendrix vein, but with a definite British vibe, lots of guitar. Nick Saloman played all instruments on this with the exception of Bari Watts (lead guitar on track 4), Graham Cumming (piano on track 9) and Mick Wills (acoustic guitar on track 11). Plan 9 - Frustration (1982)

After the band released their first single Can’t Stand This Love, Goodbye in 1981 they quickly followed up with this 7 song EP in February of 1982. The EP contains all covers of mid sixties classic garage records, done with that great Plan 9 sound. I just love Eric Stumpo’s vocals, they just fit this material so well, oh yeah the guitars and organ are great too! The band was developing their own signature sound, and on the almost 12 minute version of Painted Ship’s Frustration I think they found it. Highly recommended.

Great obscure hard rock album, the original on Tiger Lily is quite rare. There isn’t another record like this one, it’s in a class all of its own. It rocks solidly the whole way through, avoiding all the things that usually make hard rock albums kinda suck. For a more in depth review go here. Burghers - Vol. 1

Decent collection of 14 sides from the mid sixties Pittsburgh area. In the short 14 tracks (plus an untitled bonus track) this collection covers a lot of ground. Some good punk from the Swamp Rats, Hides and The Time Stoppers to some messed up psych weirdness from Marshmallow Steamshovel, Dig the chipmunk vocals on Steamshovel. There is even some poppier sides from Peter’s Pipers and Napoleonic Wars. This disc has really good sound quality as well.

BURGHERS

Complex - S/T (1970)

This private pressing from 1970 sounds of a different vintage entirely, especially considering heavier groups like Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath were providing the inspiration for budding bands at that time and psych was becoming passe. Only 99 copies of this Blackpool bands album were pressed and due to the use of a crappy pressing plant in Scotland the results were dreadful. Admittedly the sound is not great, but from what I understand this release is the best sound this record has ever had. So once you get past that, this record has some great songs. All songs are originals by the band except for a good cover of Joe South’s Hush. The band has an organ heavy sound which sounds more like ’68 than ’70. There is some really great psych on Self Declaration and Live For The Minute has some good acid guitar. The band recorded a second album a few short months later, which reportedly has better sound attributes.

Before You Were Punk: A Punk Rock Tribute To 80’s New Wave

Here is a really fun compilation, and a great idea that works well. Why not take a bunch of southern California punks and have them cover new wave hits from the 80’s. Most of these songs stay pretty close to the original versions, they just have a lot more guitar and the keyboards have gone away. Anyway I don’t think they were aiming for any artistic visions while doing these covers. Arguably some versions eclipse the older original versions, this is most evident of Jughead’s Revenge’s take on Rod Stewart’s Young Turks (a song I couldn’t even stand back in the day). There was also a second volume with 12 more tributes, so if enough of you like this I will post that too. So turn off your brain for awhile and have a little brainless punk fun.

Not sure of the release date on this particular CD, but my guess is an early 90’s release.
