The Forty Fives - Get It Together

Great debut from these Atlanta Georgia garagesters, with one of the coolest band names in recent history.

Top Drawer - Solid Oak

Anybody up for some early seventies stoner basement rock? Not a perfect album by any means, the second half kind of drags on with a few turds, but overall I enjoy this one quite a bit. This should appeal to fans of the eponymous Mary Butterworth record, both albums generate a certain “real” atmosphere. Check it out...

WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THEY TOOK THE PEOPLE AWAY - TOP DRAWER

The Resonars - Lunar Kit

Matt Rendon sang and played all the instruments on Lunar Kit, his second album for the Get Hip label. Eleven great original jangly harmony rich songs that might just remind you of the Hollies, Byrds or Beatles.

The Lears - The Story So Far...

If you dig the sound of a jangly 12 string Rickenbacker, you won’t want to miss this one. This is basically a collection of the bands 45’s, EP’s, compilation  and unreleased tracks. Sure to appeal to Byrds and Love fans alike.

COMING HOME TODAY - THE LEARS

Slow Moving Reptiles - U Baby

Not much to say about this one, everybody knows the band and the hits. This is their second album, and in my opinion their best. It’s a shame their albums are currently out of print, with the exception of a Greatest Hits collection. Perhaps someday a great re-issue label such as Rev-Ola will rectify this situation.

The Darlings - Copperfields

Copperfields was the followup to Wheatstraw Suite, released in 1970, if you enjoyed it’s predecessor you’ll most certainly dig this gem as well. For those that don’t know, the Dillards appeared on the Andy Griffith Show (1963-1966) as the fictional bluegrass band The Darlings.

RAINMAKER - THE DILLARDS

Help? Alan & The Ushers/Sounds of Darkness

Recently a reader inquired about  a 45 by a cat named Alan. The single was released on Tuesday Records out of Albany. The A side is “Information (Help Me Please)” credited to Alan with the Ushers, the B side is “See Susie Run” credited to Alan with the Sounds of Darkness. If anybody out there in the blogosphere has any further information on this single please do tell.

The A side can be heard here...

Fictional band from the Andy Griffith Show - Wheatstraw Suite

Wheatstraw Suite was the influential 1968 album from this pioneering folk/country rock/progressive bluegrass outfit. Wheatstraw Suite saw the band moving beyond their bluegrass roots, mixing folk, rock, pop and bluegrass into their own wonderful sound. So if you dig your late sixties country rock, this is yet another piece of the puzzle.

The Fire Escape-Psychotic Reaction +

Great fuzzy exploitation album from a group of studio musicians, with a bonus record from The Seeds.
