ÁLVARO URQUIJO - 1998 - SELFTITLED

Los Secretos are a Pop Rock band from Spain born in 1980. In 1998, they were the only survivors to that was called "la Movida Madrileña" (the 80's Madrid Scene). Their music had artists' influences as Dylan, Springsteen, Jackson Browne, James Taylor or Crosby, Still, Nash and Young.
Álvaro Urquijo is a guitarist, composer and singer born in Madrid on 1962. He founded "Los Secretos" together with his brothers Enrique and Javier.
The precedents already are explained; two sufficient points to place the personage. He has been so many years one of Los Secretos, a history plenty of beautiful songs.
An album is not supported only by the name of the artist. If there are no songs, everything exceeds. It's a question of putting to do it and do it fine. This it the success of this album. Ten songs, one after other one, perfectly elaborated. And, which is more important, inspired. All that, though it turns out to be obvious, not all the artists obtain it. Álvaro has demonstrated always with Los Secretos that he could do songs, very good songs. It was necessary to verify, if he knew to do songs alone with another idiosyncrasy and responsibility.
It's necessary to forget of Los Secretos though not completely. It's necessary to think about the songs, about the lyrics. It's necessary to know that he doesn't like the fuss. He likes the very transparent guitars, the smoothness of the sound of the steel-guitar, the sound of the harmonica, the simplicity of a melody and the emotion of a lyric. Slightly very silly in an age of exuberant remixes, of disproportionate miscegenations, of false yellow hairs. Not, his first solo album won't change the history of the rock. In exchange, he recovers the taste for returning to listen songs. No tags. Or if anything, the emotion.

Tracks:

The Aces Combo - Introducing

Introducing The Aces Combo is a crude and amateurish Justice title, created by five 14-15 year old kids. Despite their below average musical abilities, or in spite of them, this album has it’s charms and is an enjoyable listen. As a bonus, this album lacks the crappy horn section, which has marred many Justice titles. All in all, this still blows the doors off of The Checkmates album.

The Barracudas - A Plane View Of The

A Plane View Of The Barracudas, a much better Justice title.

The Checkmates - Meet The Checkmates

For Justice label completists only, I can’t find any redeeming qualities on this turd. Horn-O-Phobes beware! Posted for the above mentioned completist(s).

The Rockin’ Ramrods - The Best Of The Rockin’ Ramrods

The Best Of The Rockin’ Ramrods is not really a comprehensive collection as much as it’s an overview of the four phases of this legendary Boston band. They started out as a mainly instrumental group and then added vocals and an updated sound more aligned with the Lost and Barry And The Remains. In 1968 a name change to Puff along with a new musical direction in a more pop psych direction would occur, check out tracks 12 thru 22 for this period. And finally in 1971 the band reformed as the Ramrods and recorded an unreleased album, there are three tracks on here from that album 23-25.

The Psycho Daisies - Pushin’ Up Daisies

I have always had the best intentions of digitizing Pushin’ Up Daisies, the first EP from The Psycho Daisies, it just didn’t happen until this morning. As I was doing some research on these guys I was saddened to hear that Johnny Salton, the guitarist behind the Daisies, had just recently passed away. Another senseless victim of the ever evil cancer that seems to touch most peoples lives in one way or another. So as your giving this a listen, say a prayer for the family and friends of Johnny Salton. And be sure to visit the Psycho Daisies website for more information on all their other releases.

MAMÁ: E.P. (1980) + EL ÚLTIMO BAR (1981) + MAMÁ (1982) + NADA MÁS-LIVE (1997) + EL SHOW EMPIEZA-LAS MAQUETAS (2000)

Greeted as the band with the Pop more near to the sound of the Spanish bands of the 60s, they played the most current sounds that were devastating the british scene in the 80's, the new wave and the power pop.
Their first E.P., produced by Carlos Narea, who let the band to work to their air, it's one of the best vinyls of the Spanish New Wave. Four songs of simple, fresh, enterteining pop, without pretensions, two of them any more power pop and energetic, and other two more acoustics, between that the above mentioned stand out "Nada Más", and "Ya No Volverás", two half times tremendously sticky of dislike, both composed by Jose Maria Granados.
Their first album "El Último Bar" begins with very costellian "El Show Empieza", the ideal song to begin a concert. The influence of illustrate newwavers as the own Costello or Any Trouble makes be obvious also in songs as "Chica Cruel" or "Ligarse A Vicky", and the power pop more dancer of "El Figurín" with a pace that can remember to bands as the Doctor Feelgood sweetened and passed to the area of the pop.
Chapter separete deserve "Escóndete", the purest Power Pop. One of the best all times spanish songs, who resembles those jewels hidden in singles of English and lost Americans bands, so typical of that age.
"El Último Bar" is as they themselves recognize: a tribute to The Records and their "Starry Eyes".
Also there's occasion to raise the foot of the accelerator, a time for 60's ballads, with letters of dislike or teen disenchantment, as "El Número equivocado" and "Buscándote A Ti".
A great album.
After the first excellent long play of the band, the Selftitled album is one of the most disappointing discs that we have had the opportunity to listen to a Spanish band. The songs already are not, in general, at the level of the previous ones but the company commits the most serious mistake on having entrusted the production of the album to Luis Cobos, who demonstrates that he was out to the New Wave sound of Mamá, beside not understanding ever the needs of the sound of a group of these characteristics.
A disaster of production.
Taken from lafonoteca.net, reviewed by Rafa García-Purriños.

"Nada Más" was recorded live in 1997 and contains all their greatest hits.
"El Show Empieza" is a very good collection of demos of their best songs.

THE SWEAT - 2007 - NO MORE RUNNING [Expanded Edition]

They came from Belfast (North Ireland). Originally founded in 1978 as No Sweat, they were sued by Pete Townsends Eel Pie Records, which had a band of the same name. They changed their name to THE SWEAT and had several hits in the early Eighties.

The album contains one of my all times favorite songs "Why'd Ya Have To Lie", which could be put together with songs like Back Of My Hand (The Jags), Let's Go (Dirty Looks), What I Like About You (The Romantics), Don't Wait Up (The Beat) or Starry Eyes (The Records)

Lineup:

Clive Culbertson: vocals, bass, guitar / Michael Katin: guitar / David Stuart: keyboards /Ricky Bleakley: drums

Here I leave a video of his live performance in Tokyo in November 2007, the sound carries the original version of "Why'd Ya Have To Lie" and only at the end of the song the voice sounds live. It's clear that the years do not go in vain and our bodies are no longer as in the early 80's.

Tracklisting:

1. Isn't Anything Sacred (2:23) / 2. Here Comes Another Lonely Night (3:11) / 3. No More Running (2:23) / 4. You Gotta Lotta Nerve (2:30) / 5. I Can Hardly Wait (3:41) / 6. Can't Help Myself (3:16) / 7. I Must Be Crazy (2:50) / 8. Please Don't Say You Love Me (2:44) / 9. We All Make Mistakes (3:17) / 10. Why'd You Have To Lie (2:55) / 11. Do You Wanna Break My Heart (2:08) / 12. How Much Longer (2:58)

CD bonus tracks:

13. Start All Over Again (No Sweat) / 14. You Should Be So Lucky (No Sweat) / 15 Let Your Love Shine On (No Sweat) / 16. Ginny Don't Cry (No Sweat) / 17. Hey Little Girl / 18. Nobody Told Me / 19. Don't Say A Word

NEW ADVENTURES - 1999 - SELFTITLED ('80) + WILD CATS MOANIN' ('81)

The Dutch New Adventures started in Groningen, Holland in 1978. Part-of the new-wave culture at the time brought them great success. The trio contributes their style to Cuby & the Blizzard, Gallagher, Cream, Hendrix, at Years After and ZZ-Top.

They secured a contract with Polydor about 1979, stands the trio in the voorprogramma of a tournee of applied Golden Earring! In 1980, Earrings producer/guitarist George Kooymans helped with the first LP "New Adventures" and the group scored a hit with the track "Come On". Kooymans also produced their second LP "Wild Cats Moanin'", the group develloped an enviable reputation as a fantastic live act and on 8 June 1981 they perform at a pop-festival. In front of 50,000 rockfans they remain one of Hollands top groups. Third LP was "Follow".

After a short silence, they returned with the fourth LP, "Radiator". Henk has been replaced by the new drummer Peter Walrecht, their style became more contemporary

A further and longer period of silence from the band, followed by the "Best-off (best Adventures)" and a live-LP "Life is a mess" was released. At the end of 1989 Scorpions producer Dierks, Peter and Harry went to Germany to start a new project. Two CD's ("New emptying" and "Deep Colors Bleed") followed as well as a tour in Germany, France and the USA. Ending 1993 with the name "New Adventures" a new tour was started and with the Canadian guitarist Stalemate Travers a complete Europe tour was played.

Bass player Harry decided however in 1995 to return to Germany and then Gerrit Peat became their new bass player. A new CD "Baby Shake" was released. It is a real old-fashioned blues tune and draws upon older track: "Come on" and "Back to the pip". Soon afterwards Gerrit Peat was replaced Ruud Engelbert.

The band still tour Europe, but infrequently. (Leeds Music Scene)

IAN MATTHEWS – 1972 – JOURNEYS FROM GOSPEL OAK [Expanded]

Ian Matthews was incredibly prolific in the late-60's/early-70's leaving two albums on the shelf. The 2nd Plainsong album (available on the Water label) is the better of the two, but I was very happy with Gospel Oak when I finally heard it. It was easy to take music of this style and quality for granted 30-odd years ago. Ian had impeccable taste in song-selection, his beautiful voice never missed a note and he always surrounded himself with sympathetic and skilled musicians. This may be an unambitious album - recorded to fullfill his contract with Vertigo I believe - but it is a satisfying one. A comfortable shoe for any fan of Ian Matthews. (Guy R. Ewald)

Personnel:

Ian Matthews - guitar, vocals / Jerry Donahue - guitar / Andy Roberts - guitar / Pat Donaldson - bass / Timi Donald - drums

Tracks:

Knowing the Game (Ian Matthews) / Polly (Gene Clark) / Things You Gave Me (Tim Hardin) / Mobile Blue (Mickey Newbury) / Tribute to Hank Williams (Tim Hardin) / Met Her on a Plane (Jimmy Webb) / Bride 1945 (Paul Siebel) / Franklin Avenue (Ian Matthews) / Do Right Woman, Do Right Man (Dan Penn/Chips Moman) / Sing Me Back Home (Merle Haggard)

Concrete Rubber Band

Anyone in the mood for some real out there Jesus psych, if so Risen Savior may be the album for you. All sorts of crazy synthesized sounds over a basement psychedelic groove which is fidelity challenged. Guaranteed not to sound like any other Xian album you have heard before. So what are you waiting for, maybe this can help save your sinning ass from frying in the depths of hell.

The Clique

How about a little Sunday morning syrup. The Clique is probably best known for their 1969 hit single Sugar On Sunday/Superman on White Whale. Superman of course would later be covered by R.E.M. in 1986.

THE BOYS - 1980 - BOYS ONLY

The Boys were perhaps punk's saddest casualty. They could — indeed, should — have been enormous. Certainly they were one of the finest live acts around, but still they were to languish in comparative obscurity, with even their continental success seemingly working against them. Even worse, when their debut album was reissued on CD, it arrived with a sticker on the front proclaiming the involvement of '80s AOR superstar John Waite — a claim which has absolutely no grounding in reality. More recent reissues have redressed the balance (or at least dumped the sticker), while the band itself has regrouped on occasion, to thrill a new generation with those classic numbers. But still the story of the Boys is one filled with great songs, an arsenal of killer hooks, and too many lost opportunities to count. (all music... read more)

Tracks:

Weekend / Wrong Arm of the Law / Poor Little Rich Girl / Monotony / Nothing Ventured / Wonderful World / Scrubber / Satisfaction Guaranteed / Gabrielle / Miss You / Little White Lifeline / Let It Rain / Cool [bonus] / Lucy [bonus] / Terminal Love [Single Version] [bonus]

THE BOYS: SELFTITLED (1977) + TO HELL WITH THE BOYS (1979)

The Boys' is chock full of fast, tuneful and powerful songs and still stands as probably their best record. From the Brats re-treads of “Sick On You” and “Tumble With Me” to the set closer “Living In The City“ it‘s a breeze of fresh air and this wonderful record debuted at number 50 in the album start and then promptly disappeared. Blame for this has been apportioned to the recent death of Elvis Presley meaning that the pressing plants couldn’t cope with producing enough records, but in truth it was probably more down to the hapless NEMS label’s shortcomings.
In To Hell With The Boys we can find songs like "Rue Morgue", an absolute delight with great chord and rhythm changes. "You can't hurt a Memory" a power ballad that is intense and heartfelt and very John Lennonish. "Lonely Cowboy" just downright fun and it rocks. Matt Dangerfield really shines here as a guitar player too. More Pop Rock than Punk, this is a great album.

The Boys tracks:

Sick on You / I Call Your Name / Tumble With Me / Tonight / I Don't Care / Soda Pressing / No Money / First Time / Box Number / Kiss Like a Nun / Cop Cars / Keep Running / Tenement Kids / Living in the City / Watcha Gonna Do - (bonus track) / Turning Grey - (bonus track) / First Time, The (Long Version) - (bonus track) / Lonely Schooldays - (bonus track) / I Don't Care - (bonus track) / Take a Heart - (demo, bonus track) / Run Rudolph Run - (The Yobs, bonus track) / Warm Song, The - (The Yobs, bonus track)

RED ROCKERS: GOOD AS GOLD (1983) + SCHIZOPHRENIC CIRCUS (1984) [1995 Reissue]

Thus armed with no great expectations, Good as Gold came as something of a surprise, starting with the first track. Gone was the raging rhetoric, replaced by a startlingly pretty pop song, "China" filled with articulate, ringing guitars and John Griffith's newly smoothed-up vocals. With ex-Stiff Little Fingers drummer Jim Reilly in the lineup, Red Rockers switched to melodic pop-rock, much like 415 labelmates Translator but with more emphasis on electric drive and generally less-exceptional songwriting.
Good as Gold is consistently good and "China" deservedly became a hit single, but the band failed to really catch on commercially, and returned with an equally bewildering follow-up, Schizophrenic Circus. Seemingly an attempt to become America's Alarm, the LP — produced by Rick Chertoff — goes nouveau-country and encompasses both the anthemic, folky "Blood From a Stone" (covering the Hooters) and a totally unnecessary remake of "Eve of Destruction." Danger sign: too little original material of any significant quality.

Good As Gold + Schizophrenic Circus tracks:

China / Good as Gold / Dreams Fade Away / Change the World Around / Answers to the Questions / 'Til It All Falls Down / Running Away from You / Fanfare for Metropolis / (Come on into) My House / Home Is Where the War Is / Just Like You / Blood from a Stone / Shades of '45 / Another Day / Freedom Row / Good Thing I Know Her / Eve of Destruction / Both Hands in the Fire / Burning Bridges

RED ROCKERS - 1981 - CONDITION RED [1999 Reissue]

New Orleans, Louisiana, 1979. Formed with the name of the Rat Finks doing cover tunes. Later they changed their name to the Red Records inspired in a Dils song and moved to San Francisco to sign with 415 Records and put out "Condition Red" in 1981.
In the early 80s the greatest band to imatate the Clash were...Stiff Little Fingers! However, the best Amercian Clash soundalikes were the Red Rockers. Combining traditional US hardcore with the sound created by Strummer & Jones "Condition Red" is one of THE most sought-after punk classics. Best moments: "guns of revolution", "teenage underground", "can you hear" and a punked-up version of "Folsom Prison blues" (with guest "yahoos" & "ehaws" by Jello Biafra! ).

Personnel:

John Thomas Griffith : vocals, guitar, keyboards / Patrick Butler Jones : drums / James Singletary : lead guitar / Darren Hill : bass.

Tracks:

Guns Of Revolution / Teenage Underground / Peer Pressure / Can You Hear / Grow Up / Know What I Think / Dead Heroes / Folsom Prison Blues / Condition Red / Hold On / White Law / Live Or Die / Nothing To Lose / Desperate Times / Voice Of America / Missing In Action / Shackin' All Over / Let's Rock

THE SPORTS - 1979 - DON'T THROW STONES

By virtue of their late '70s emergence and a deal with Stiff Records in Europe, the Sports were accidentally New Wave. But they were always too soulful and too capricious to join that club (or any) by choice. With new guitarist Martin Armiger, their second album Don't Throw Stones had some of punk's nervous energy but Stephen Cummings couldn't shake his R&B groove, nor Andrew Pendlebury his jazz/rockabilly bent. The divergent talents of the band's creative core would make for some of the most volatile swingin' pub rock of the era, and "Suspicious Minds", "Live, Work and Play", "Who Listens to the Radio?" and "Don't Throw Stones" were early warnings of a formidable knack for twisted pop songs. (by Michael Dwyer - Australian Rolling Stone)

The Sports were:

Andrew Pendlebury: guitars, vocals / Stephen Cummings: vocals / Martin Armiger: guitars, vocals / Robert Glover: bass guitar / Paul Hitchins: drums / James Niven: keyboards, vocals

THE BOYS - 1978 - ALTERNATIVE CHARTBUSTERS

Condemned at the time for offering up little more than a straight carbon copy of its predecessor, the second Boys album has since ascended to the pantheon of power pop greats, a combination of the band's own inestimable position at the forefront of what, by early 1978, was already a burgeoning movement, and their seemingly effortless grasp of the rudiments of, indeed, a great pop song. "Brickfield Nights," the opening track (and the band's third single), is almost Spector-esque in its vision, a Wall of Sound that totally predicts all that the Ramones would later do with Spector himself, but transplants the action and emotions into a strictly English setting, a soaring paean to the lost innocence of youth, set to a transistor blast of melody. Elsewhere, "Taking On the World," the deliberately Ramones-esque "Neighbourhood Brat," and the sourly recriminatory "Do the Contract Hustle" all illustrate the Boys' vivid sense of musical humor. Delving into the bonus tracks only amplifies the group's achievement. Songs the quality of "Teachers Pet," "Schooldays," and "She's No Angel" are hard enough to find in any band's catalog. The fact that the Boys could simply bury them away on B-sides or the shelf only amplifies the sheer wealth of quality material that was at their disposal. ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide ~

Tracks:

Brickfield Nights / U.S.I. / Taking On The World / sway (Quien Sera) / Do The Contract Hustle / Heroine / Not Ready / Classified Suzie / T.C.P. / Neighbourhood Brat / Stop Stop Stop / Backstage Pass / Talking / Cast Of Thousands / Teachers Pet - (bonus track) / Schooldays - (bonus track) / Lies - (bonus track) / She's No Angel - (bonus track) / You're The Other Man - (bonus track) / Silent Night - (The Yobs, bonus track)

CINDY BULLENS - 1979 - DESIRE WIRE

A little biography of this great artist.
In 1974, arrived to Los Angeles, Cindy Bullens went to a party in the study of Elton John's recording. He made impressed up of her to the point of turning into one of his chorus-singers during three world tours, an album multiplatinum (Blue Moves), and the number one of 1975 "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart".
Also she took part in Rod Stewart's Album "Atlantic Crossing", beside forming a part, in 1975, of the tour "Rolling Thunder Revue" of Bob Dylan. In 1978, she was nominated to a Grammy by her participation in the original soundtrack of the movie "Grease".
Later, her debut album, "Desire Wire" (1979) had her hit single "Survivor", with a second nomination to the Grammy, by the "Better vocal interpretation of rock". - My favourite song is "Hot tears", a perfect tune -.
After her wedding with Dan Crewe, she initiates an optional retirement to dedicate to her daughters. Unfortunately, in December of 1995 her daughter Jessie, 10 years, was diagnosed with cancer and died in March of 1996. Fruit of this painful moment, Cindy publishes the impressive "Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth". For Cindy no longer there was a "musical race", but simultaneously she was convinced that the music was the only thing that could give back the peace to her.
Cindy has shared scene and recording studio with great rock artists: Bob Dylan, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Joe Cocker, K.D. Lang, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, etc.
This is her first and great album never reissued on cd format.
For All Music: "One of the great lost rock albums of the '70s, Bullens' debut release is full of tough, passionate, incredibly catchy rock & roll played to the hilt and sung with fire. (4 1/2 stars)"

THE BONGOS - 1982 - DRUMS ALONG THE HUDSON

The Bongos recorded their early singles and their well-received debut EP for UK-based Fetish Records. Their debut U.S. album, Drums Along The Hudson, compiled from the band's British singles, was released in 1982 to mostly favorable reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. While Trouser Press suggested that the group "may trade a certain amount of substance for easy appeal," it added that "there's no better musical equivalent of whipped cream anywhere."
Writing in the Village Voice, Robert Christgau dryly commented that "for all their jumpy originality [the songs are] still slight, and Richard Barone's lyrics are so oblique you have to wonder what his angle is.
In 2007 however, Jim DeRegotis wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times: "The initial impression of naivete is offset by deceptively simple lyrics that actually hint at deep, dark mysteries and unfathomed mystical enigmas."
The group's cover of T. Rex's "Mambo Sun" reached #72 on the Billboard Dance Chart.

INVADERS - 1980 - TEST CARD

Courtesy of "Gumby", the only album released by this good New Wave band.
Take pomp-rock, shorten its sights (unpump the pomp a bit), inject a bit of youth, alternate male and female vocals and what have you got? The Invaders (from West Yorkshire — not to be confused with two American bands of the same name), who still manage to have all the snap and appeal of week-old pastry. Too much of their "Rock Methodology" and not enough playfulness makes the Invaders a dull band. (Jim Green - Trouser Press)

Welcome to the Club!

Hi guys.
About three years ago me and other fools began the adventure of a blog called Power Pop Lovers.
Unfortunately the adventure was only active for a year more or less, the reason: a 'person' a little bit intransigent.
Each of the partners has taken different steps and now maintain blogs that are visited daily by thousands of lovers of the good music.
Finally I've decided to reopen the old Power Pop Lovers Blog published simultaneously on wordpress and blogger with the same inputs in order to recover and keep those wonderful albums to enjoy the nostalgic and new discoverers of them.
The new sites are:
http://powerpoplovers.wordpress.com/
http://powerpoplovers.blogspot.com/
For that reason I'm going to close PVAc Blog slowly and move the old posts here reuploading those files whose links have expired with new servers more operatives than rapidshare. Rapidshare has ceased to be an attractive host to upload.
Gradually I try to upload the albums in lossless format (FLAC) for collectors and mp3 (320) for the other users. Please! be patient because I have only 640 kb upstream, and the uploads are very slow.
To avoid download problems and unnecessary delays, I recommend to use jdownloader (can be used in windows and mac). It's easy to use and you can queue multiple downloads for all the upload servers. JDownloader recognize captchas and is perfect to download files from the servers with a big speed.

Les Black Carnations - Beat The Attitude

Nice EP from Germany’s Les Black Carnations released in 1985 on the Pastell label. Contains a cool cover of the Country Joe & The Fish classic Who Am I? plus five originals. A nice mix of surfy guitars and great femme vocals give the band a distinct sound on tracks like Voices Scream and Murmur, What Time Did You Say It Was In New York City? There is some nice organ added on Black Carnations echoing the sixties sound while Echo Flower Blues is a nice surf instro workout.

Rare Mexican Cuts From The Sixties

Here’s a fun comp from Eva. Fifteen cover versions of popular tunes by the Rolling Stones, Pretty Things, Doors, Leaves, Monkees, Yardbirds, etc. all sung in Spanish.

Sainte Anthony’s Fyre

Tired of the Justice albums, try this hardrock monster originally released on the Zonk label form 1970 from this Trenton, New Jersey trio.

1. Love Over You
2. Get Off
3. Summer Fun
4. Starlight
5. Lone Soul Road
6. With You Beau
7. Chance of Fate
8. Wet Back

The Stowaways - ...In Our Time

Another Justice rarity from the Stowaways, supposedly one of the rarer releases on the label. I would rate ...In Our Time as one of the better on the label that I have heard, still no Tempos but certainly more engaging and palatable than the Invaders album. Give it a spin and judge for yourself.

The Invaders - On The Right Track

One of the lesser albums on the Justice label, these guys hailed from Charlottesville, Virginia. This is your typical Justice formula of mostly covers with an original or two thrown in for good measure. In this case it was certainly good measure because the opener Have You Ever is the best thing about this record, a nice Farfisa fueled tune with a cool fuzzy break. There is one other original Just For Kicks but it doesn’t even come close to  Have You Ever. The covers rely too heavily on the dreadful use of horns. On The Right Track... I don’t think so.
