If you dig enthusiastically and ineptly played sixties garage, then this may just be your thing. Evidently this New England garage band was more than familiar with the Stones. The original LP was a split deal from St. Mark’s prep school, one side by Rasputin And The Monks and the flip by the Octet school chorus. For the 1984 vinyl reissue, the Octet school chorus side was omitted, which I would imagine is for the best.

Excellent punk rock from this early San Francisco band, who happened to open for the Sex Pistols at their final show at Winterland, which led to a recording session with Steve Jones. This collection was released in 1983 and contains the bands complete output between 1977 and 1979. Supposedly this was re-issued in 2010, however I have not been able to track it down, if anyone knows where to purchase this please let me know. So if you ever see this awesome disc, by all means grab it. And lastly, this was meant to be played loudly, so enjoy!

Plan 9 was one of the best bands to come out of the Paisley Underground scene, and one could argue this was one of the best records as well. The band hailed from Rhode Island, and consisted of Eric Stumpo, Deb DeMarco, John DeVault, Evan Williams, Mike Ripa, Tom Champlin, John Florence and Steven Andersen. Prior to the release of Dealing With The Dead the band had released a 45 and EP on the Voxx label. Dealing With The Dead was released in 1983 on Midnight Records, sporting R.K. Sloane fluorescent artwork and a comic book to boot. There is nothing flowery or pretty on this record, Plan 9 had more of an acidic garage sound than a hippie vibe, sometimes it can even be spooky. If you fancy a wall of guitars, whirling keyboards this is for you. I had the good fortune to catch these guys at a small club in Madison Wisconsin back in the day, and I was just blown away, I had never seen 8 people crammed onto such a small stage. And those 4 guitars, just incredible, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. This was remastered in 1993 with 6 bonus tracks added. So if you missed this excellent record the first time around give it a listen, and if you enjoy it, take that money you were going to spend on that David Archuleta CD and buy this instead, cuz nobody’s going to remember David Archuleta in 25 years. Brothers Kenny and Richie Collins (along with any family or friends nearby who wanted to help out) recorded these tracks in the family’s basement, also known as the Asparagus Room, in 1963 on a two track reel recorder delivered by Santa himself in 1962. So if you dig raw and crude rock and roll passionately played, this may suit your tastes well.

This is my own cassette rip and artwork, so you can expect the GP66 treatment and quality you’ve come to enjoy. Goldmine magazine and ROIR put this wonderful collection out way back in 1985, a lot of these bands are household names these days (okay, at least this household). Bands like the Vipers, Gravedigger V, Tell-Tale Hearts, Pandoras, Fuzztones etc. will need no introduction. It’s the tracks from bands like the Mosquitos, Boys From Nowhere, Aromatics, Trip, Mystic Eyes that will generate the most interest and listening enjoyment.

Okay there were originally eight volumes of Back From The Grave released on vinyl, volume 7 and 8 were double album sets. Once the digital age came along and the CD versions were released, there was a total of five volumes (Part One through Part Four and Volume Eight). Not all of the tracks from vinyl made it to the CD releases, according to my calculations a total of 21 tracks never made it onto the CD versions.

American Wino by The Lewd has to be one of my most favorite punk rock records from the early eighties hardcore scene. After reading a favorable review in Maximum Rock And Roll, I marched down to the local record store (The Inner Sleeve, to whom I am forever grateful) and picked up a copy of this excellent record. The band originated from Seattle but later moved to San Francisco. This CD (unfortunately out of print) collects the bands first single, the American Wino LP and some demo’s and out-takes.
