The Squires - Going All The Way With The Squires!

Your all probably familiar with “Going All The Way” by The Squires, here is the rest of their recorded legacy. You’ll find both sides or their two singles, unreleased demos from April of 1966 and rehearsal tapes from August of 1966, and it’s all great!

The Laughing Soup Dish - Underthrow The Overground (1990)

Second and last album from LSD, this one released in 1990.

The Laughing Soup Dish - We Are The Dish (1987)

The debut album from this West Long Branch, NJ combo, released in 1987.

The Rabble - Leps And Other New Words (1980) M-80

Here is a curious independent record from 1980 released on the M-80 label. Back in the day I saw a video for “Spider” along with “Yellow Pills” by 20/20 and some other more popular bands like the Pretenders. I have searched the internet feverishly to try and find this video, but still have not had any luck in that regard. Every since that day I have been searching for this record, and as fate would have it 20+ years later I finally stumbled upon it. Not only 1 copy but two, seems this record had two variations of artwork. One is billed as being by The Rabble and the other was billed by Mark Hoffman And The Rabble, both have the same songs and sequencing, just different back and front cover artwork.
Band members consisted of James Hansen (drums), Randal Vandal (guitar), Mark Hoffman (vocals), and Vince Santa Maria (bass). The band appears to have been from California possibly calling Los Angeles home. I guess this record would be categorized as new wave, with a more guitar versus synth sound. Overall this is an uneven album, with a few great moments making it an enjoyable listen, just listen to the aforementioned “Spider” and “If You See Kay.”

New England Teen Scene

I would bet most of you are familiar with this CD, and most of you already have this or the 3 original vinyl LP’s that these 30 tracks came from. If you haven’t check this out and see what you have missed, this is great collection.

Rain Parade - Crashing Dream

Speaking of classic paisley underground records that have not been reissued on CD, how about Crashing Dream from Rain Parade. Okay it’s a bit more commercial than Emergency Third Rail Power Trip or Explosions In The Glass Palace, but that doesn’t take away it’s charm whatsoever. This was the bands second release on Island and came out in 1985.

The Things - Outside My Window

Outside My Window is a classic album from L.A.’s paisley underground. This was the second album from this La Habra California quartet, considered to be their best. Sadly this has never been reissued on CD.

The Tryfles

From the same paisley underground scene that spawned the Fuzztones and Mosquitos came the Tryfles with their debut album, which would turn out to also be the last. This record was released in 1986 on the Midnight label.

Soup - The Album Soup

Soup featuring the talented Doug Yankus along with Rob Griffith and David Faas formed out of the ashes of Appleton Wisconsin’s own Private Property of Digil. The Private Property of Digil released 5 singles on the local Tee Pee and Target labels before disbanding. As Soup, the band released a self titled DIY album in 1970 on the Arf Arm Artists label. The bands first album along with the Private Property of Digil material and unreleased tracks can be found on the Gear Fab release Soup. This is the bands second album released on Big Tree Records in 1971. Sadly Doug Yankus passed away in 1982 due to complications with diabetes just a few years after Rob Griffith passed away, and David Faas still is still playing music.

Slitherama

Slitherama, the third and final volume in the series gives us yet another glimpse into Tokyo garage bands from the sixties, it leaves me wanting more.

Big Lizard Stomp!

Big Lizard Stomp! the second installment of the teen trash from psychedelic Tokyo series, contains what has to be the most insane version of “Hey Joe” these ears have heard, brought to you by The Golden Cups. This volume is even more entertaining than the first, “I’m So Glad” is an absolute howl.

The Fleshtones - Roman Gods

From 1981 the Fleshtones “Roman Gods”, their first long player (not including the unreleased album on Red Star Records). What a great and classic record this is!

The Best of Metrobeat!

a cool anthology of 60’s Minneapolis sounds . . .

Fleshtones - Up Front

Excellent EP from the infamous Fleshtones, released on I.R.S. in 1980!

Battle of the Bands - Recorded Almost Alive (Onyx)

An excerpt from Aram Heller’s book on the 60’s New England Garage Scene “Till The Stroke of Dawn”...

“Garage bands from the Lowell, Massachusetts area all competed in a Battle of the Bands on September 11, 1966. The night of the battle, the recording end did not go so well. So, engineer Pat Costa took all the bands into a studio the next day, recorded one song from each band in rapid succession, and pieced together a compilation of the tracks with dubbed in applause. This explains the sameness of all the bands. All of the tracks were fairly weak covers of hits of the day. This was reissued almost exactly as the original by Star Rhythm in 1985.”
